Types of dangerous goods

In accordance with the law, dangerous goods are goods which, in the event of an accident or failure to comply with the rules of transport of dangerous goods, may cause death, illness, poisoning or burns in people and animals, as well as damage to the environment. There are 9 different classes of dangerous goods broken down as follows:

  • Class 1 – explosive substances and articles intended to produce an explosion or pyrotechnic effect.
  • Class 2 – gases, mixtures of one or more gases which may be flammable or toxic.
  • Class 3 – flammable fluids and mixtures with minor explosion hazard.
  • Class 4.1 – flammable solids, self-reactive substances and solid desensitised explosives which become dangerous from a spark.
  • Class 4.2 – self-flammable substances, pyrophoric substances, self-heating substances and articles.
  • Class 4.3 – fluids, solids and articles which emit flammable gases in contact with water.
  • Class 5.1 – oxidising substances which may cause or contribute to the ignition of other substances, mainly due to release of oxygen.
  • Class 5.2 – organic peroxides which, due to increased temperatures, friction or impact, may release harmful and flammable gases or vapours or self-ignite.
  • Class 6.1 – poisonous (toxic) substances which, in relatively small quantities, may cause poisoning or damage to human and animal health, death.
  • Class 6.2 – infectious substances containing pathogens, are able to cause animal or human disease.
  • Class 7 – radioactive materials posing radiation hazards.
  • Class 8 – corrosive substances causing chemical burns or environmental hazards.
  • Class 9 – other hazardous substances and articles not elsewhere classified.

Transport of dangerous goods

The transport of dangerous goods is organised using different means of transport. SIA LOĢISTIKAS RISINĀJUMI offers transport of dangerous goods or ADR by road, maritime and air transport. However, all vehicles are subject to the provision that the transport of dangerous goods requires special equipment, labelling and careful handling.

The transport of dangerous goods by road is specifically regulated by the ADR agreement. ADR transport is closely monitored setting high requirements with regard to vehicle equipment, the knowledge and skills of its driver. In addition, to transport ADR goods, drivers need to obtain an ADR certificate to be renewed every 5 years.

Transport of dangerous goods by sea is regulated under the SOLAS-74 Convention and is subject to special monitoring. The unloading of dangerous goods can be done only by those ports, which received the relevant permit. This type of transport poses a potential risk to people and the environment and is therefore such goods are specifically placed, secured and supervised on the ship deck.

Transport of dangerous goods by air, like transport by sea, poses a potential threat to people and the environment. This transport of dangerous goods is regulated by ICAO-TI, and a number of rules and requirements must be carefully respected.
