Types of oversized (off-gauge) loads
Two different types of off-gauge loads are oversized and overweight loads. Oversized loads are those, where dimensions of the vehicle or its composition exceed those permitted by road traffic regulations, while overweight loads exceed the actual mass or axle load of the vehicle permitted by road traffic regulations. Transport of overweight loads is implemented using special heavy trailers capable of carrying the cargo load.

Transport of oversized loads has higher costs compared to other freight transport due to the use of non-standard machinery and solutions. Prices are not only influenced by the use of specialised modes of transport and machinery, but also by the destination of transport of overweight loads, i.e. route, cargo size and weight. For example, if the width of the cargo does not exceed 3 metres, the transport costs will be lower because it will not require getting of a permit for transport of oversized or off-gauge loads. Similarly, the costs of transport of oversized loads may be higher if an escort is required for the transport of the cargo to ensure safe movement between other road users. Finally, price differences arise not only depending on the distance to the destination of transport of oversized load, but also on the mode of transport – whether the cargo can be delivered by road or multimodal transport, the use of several modes of transport, will be required. Permit for the transport of oversized and overweight load
Transport of oversized (off-gauge) and overweight load requires a special permit – the transport of oversized and overweight load requires a permit issued by Latvijas Valsts ceļi in accordance with Cabinet of Ministers Regulation No. 343. This permit should be obtained for all oversized load vehicles, with the exception of those vehicles carrying out road maintenance works or towing vehicles.
A permit for the transport of oversized and overweight load is issued for 3 different periods: per one transport, for 12 months or for an unlimited period.
The permit for one transport for a particular vehicle – this permit can be selected if oversized load is to be transported, but it is not necessary on a regular basis, or if the load is to be transported on a specific route.
Permit for 12 calendar months – the most frequently selected permit by companies like SIA LOĢISTIKAS RISINĀJUMI, which know that they will perform frequent and regular transport of oversized loads.
Permit for an unlimited period – this is the most specific permit which can only be obtained by those vehicles registered in the Republic of Latvia, in which:
- one of the cargo parameters (length, width, height from carriageway surface) exceeds the values set in Cabinet of Ministers Regulations No. 279, Annex 2, but does not exceed 24 m in length, 4 m in width and 4.5 m in height from the carriageway surface;
- the mass exceeds the mass specified in Cabinet of Ministers Regulations No. 279, Annex 2, but does not exceed 48 tonnes
- the axle load exceeds the one specified in Cabinet of Ministers Regulations No. 279, Annex 2, but does not exceed 13 tonnes.
Insurance of oversized (off-gauge) loads
We recommend to insure oversized cargo against damage or destruction of cargo.
